Electric & Hybrid Industrial Vehicle Technology Symposium, which took place in Cologne from 9-10 November, was dedicated to the design and development of electric and hybrid vehicle technology for the construction, agricultural, industrial and off-highway vehicle industry, including rail cars and ship equipped with large engines.
The symposium brought together R&D engineers and heads of design and engineering from around the world to discuss, debate and analyse the growing possibilities and future developments for the hybridisation of off-highway vehicles.
With over 150 participants at the event and 6 exhibitors showcasing their expertise, the symposium was largely a success and gave good insights into the future scope of the topic. Speakers from prominent players in the industry presented their views on how the advent of electrification could impact the off-highway vehicle industry in a substantial way with respect to fuel consumption savings as well as drivetrain simplifications. While most of the speakers agreed on electrification being the future in terms of sustainability and environmental implications, the transition to such a change in technology involves huge costs up front which most of the manufacturers are unwilling to take. This will be the challenge that the legislators and the authority have to take into account while planning the future of these machines.
The symposium was also positive in establishing the benefits and advantages as well as the disadvantages of electrification and hybridisation of the off-highway vehicles. A CIMAC member company had the opportunity to share its point of view regarding hybridisation of powertrains and was also present as one of the chairs of the panel discussion, while CIMAC was an associated partner for the event.
