CIMAC WG8 Guideline 'Two-Stroke Engine Cold Corrosion'



The guideline aims to understand the issue of cold corrosion which has been a regular occurrence with operators of large two-stroke marine engines due to engine operation at low loads. It intends to explore the science behind cold corrosion; what it is and why it occurs? As a part of the continuous development, engine manufacturers introduced engines with improved fuel efficiency, which are characterized by having large stroke to bore ratios and are often described as super long stroke. The guideline will also aim to understand the hardware involved, fuel and operational effects and provide the reader with some general advice regarding dealing with cold corrosion.


Due to their design and general operating conditions, the guideline does not take four-stroke engines into consideration, as they do not experience the same high level of cold corrosion.
