The Marine Battery Forum and CIMAC have jointly unveiled a new paper titled “Environment for the Use of Batteries in Deep-Sea Shipping.” This publication provides an in-depth analysis of the regulatory framework governing battery integration on ocean-going vessels, covering requirements from flag states, classification societies, and industry standards.
While the paper acknowledges a solid regulatory foundation, it also identifies critical gaps - particularly in operational practices and crew training. To bridge these gaps, the authors propose clear responsibilities for training and offer practical recommendations to foster collaboration among regulators, shipowners, and industry bodies. The goal: ensuring the safe and efficient adoption of battery technology at sea. Find the full paper here.
