A delegation from CIMAC actively participated in the 83rd meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) in London in April 2025. The VDMA Platform for Advanced Maritime Technology (AMT) also observed the measures adopted.
Member states adopted a series of medium-term measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions by around 2050.
Key points of the package of measures
Key points of the package of measures
- Global Fuel Standard (GFS): Ships >5,000 GT must gradually reduce their GHG intensity.
- Emission pricing mechanism: Exceeding the GFS limits will require the purchase of compensation units; low-emission ships will receive incentives.
- IMO Net Zero Fund: Financing of research, infrastructure, training, and support for developing countries.
Formal adoption is scheduled for October 2025, with entry into force expected in 2027.
