CIMAC Working Group 17 now has released the “CIMAC Guideline Impact of Gas Quality on Gas Engine Performance”. It is an updated position paper on how gas engine performance is affected by fuel quality, an increasingly relevant topic as fluctuating renewable energy sources require reliable backup power. The paper focuses on marine gas engines but is also applicable to land-based systems.

It highlights the importance of ISO 23306:2020, which specifies LNG fuel standards for marine use, though it lacks defined limits for Methane Number and particle content. The paper provides insights into engine knock, Methane Number calculation methods, debris, LNG characteristics, and pipeline gas composition. CIMAC calls for clearer standards and reliable tools to ensure safe and efficient engine operation. Find the full paper here.
