Townhall on Friday, Mar 13, 2026 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CET

During this session, the latest developments in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) will be presented, linking practical industry applications with the evolving regulatory framework at IMO. The current status of the IMO MASS Code will be outlined, including the non-mandatory and Experience-Building Phases and their significance on the path toward a future mandatory instrument. The discussion will further consider how safety is demonstrated in a MASS environment - through structured risk assessment, safety case methodology, and clearly defined concepts for human oversight and remote operations - as well as CIMAC’s contribution to ensuring technically sound and practicable requirements. This Town Hall provides a platform to gain clarity on the direction of MASS regulation, reflect on its implications for the industry, and engage in open discussion.

Moderator: Daniel Erdmann, CIMAC Deputy Secretary General Speakers: Brandon Larson, Mass Expert | Wolfgang Östreicher, Chair of CIMAC WG15 Controls & Automation
