Navigating Uncertainty: Town Hall on MEPC.ES2 Outcomes
The upcoming CIMAC Town Hall discussion on Oct 31, 13:00-14:00 (CET) will be addressing the outcomes and future direction following the Extraordinary Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC.ES2), held at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London, 14–17 October 2025.
The session’s adjournment and the postponement of a decision on the IMO Net-Zero Framework (NZF) has introduced a period of uncertainty for the maritime sector. Although the extraordinary session will reconvene in 12 months, the urgency of the climate challenge demands that work continues now. This year must be used to build consensus around a framework that is essential for investment confidence and regulatory clarity.
Meanwhile, momentum is not lost. The Intersessional Working Group on the Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, meeting from 20–24 October, continues to develop the guidelines for implementing the NZF. The maritime sector urgently needs clarity and signals of commitment. The solutions exist, but only a clear framework can unlock them at scale.
