WG7 Fuels - Part 1

Why is CIMAC and your Working Group important to the industry?

The CIMAC WG7 Fuels has existed in the industry for decades and has produced a significant amount of guidelines and recommendations to the industry. Not least over the past couple of years where the legislative environment has led to a significant change in the marine fuels. During the same period, CIMAC WG7 was represented in the IMO Joint Industry Guidance work on the Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oils.

What are the major goals of your Working Group?

The major goals of our Working Group is to provide guidance to the industry about the latest developments in the marine fuel industry as well as recommendations on how fuel impact fuel systems and marine engines.

What have you already achieved & what are the next steps?

We are 35 members (about 15 on waiting list) and we meet two times two days per year. Represented stakeholders are: Refiners, Suppliers, OEMs, Ship Operators, Fuel Testing Labs, Classification Societies and others. From the Fuels WG, we have co-operation with all CIMAC WGs in case of common topics, especially regarding ISO 8217.

Our next step is to get guidelines out from the following Sub Groups, with topics ranging from higher to lower priorities.  

• SG 1-1 CFR (centrifuges and efficiency), SG4 Guideline on stability/compatibility, SG5 LNG quality SG6 Ignition/Combustion, 2020 fuels, SG9 “How to order and use 2020 fuels”,  

• SG 1-2 Separators, SG 3 pH / Corrositivity, SG 7 Emulsion fuels and SG10 Niche fuels.
